Scuba Training FAQ
- I want to learn to dive. Where do I start?
- The course that actually certifies you to dive is the Open Water Diver course. For details on the course, click on the Open Water Diver link above.
- You have some of the same courses listed under SSI and SDI. What’s the difference?
- Courses with the same name are the same course. The materials (books) put out by each agency will be a little different but since the physics doesn’t change, the training is the same. I teach both agencies because not all the courses overlap. I started out teaching the SSI system but picked up SDI specifically to teach the Solo Diving course. Depending on your current training or future plans for scuba, there may be advantages of chosing one agency over the other. Contact DOA to determine which is right for you.
- How long does the certification last?
- The certifications offered here are lifetime certifications. They never expire. If you go a while without diving and get “rusty”, a Scuba Skills Update is recommended even though the certification is still valid.
- I’m already certified under another organization. Is it possible to cross over and what’s involved?
- It is possible to cross over. If you have your Open Water Diver certification through another agency and want to continue with SSI or SDI all you have to do is sign up. If you have a more advanced certification from another agency, generally speaking, all you have to do is sign up for whatever course you want. For the answers to questions about your specific situation, contact DOA.
